Worth the wait! I totally understand why the hiring process took so long. The entire hiring process is text-based. Yes! It's unusual but I know Automattic has their purpose of doing that. That is their way to see if the candidate would be a good fit. And I'm glad I made it! :)
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Thoughts about the project they sent, some soft skills, and conversational questions.
I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Automattic in Jun 2022
Interview
They sent me a document with instructions to install a new WP site on WordPress.com and then import a pre-designed site. There were about 10 questions/problems to work through, and the task required that I didn't fix the issues, but explain how I would resolve them. There were 2-3 specific questions they wanted me to answer as if I were responding to a customer.
I felt like I nailed this part, and even submitted a video showing me going through the steps.
They responded by saying they weren't moving forward and that I should spend time on their forums learning more about WordPress. This felt like a generic canned response. My video got 0 views.
I asked for feedback and did not receive any.
Their loss.
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Automattic in Jan 2021
Interview
All the interview was done via e-mail and Slack. First interview with an Engineer, and then code test, not really that difficult, but they threw some curve balls that you needed to make sure to understand WordPress very well..
