      Software Engineer II Interview

      18 Oct 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Jose, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at BILL (San Jose, CA) in Sept 2023

      Interview

Painful, disorganized and unprofessional interview process often going weeks between rounds (1 1/2 months total). I interviewed for a Software Engineer position with Bill. I've been through interviews with probably 13 different companies on my job search, and Bill was one of the worst ones. After multiple recruiter calls, I was immediately scheduled a technical interview for the next day at 9AM. This gave me less than 24 hours to prepare for the interview. Upon joining the interview, my interviewer never showed up. I reached out to the recruiter 10 minutes in to the call and didn't receive a response until 7 hours later, stating that "The interviewer had no idea they were scheduled". I agreed to re-schedule, and they ended up scheduling me for another one a little over a week later. I didn't mind this interview and felt that the problem was interesting and liked working with the interviewer. The recruiter says that the feedback was positive and they want me to do a final 2 hour interview. So 2 weeks later I interview with two people for my final round. The first part of the interview is a practical coding assignment and I feel I did well on it and generally liked working with the interviewer. The second interviewer is the director of the team that I'd be on. For most of the interview, they had their camera off and they often forgot things about me that I had already told them stating that they "already had a lot of these interviews today". I know I'm not the most important person in the world, but it would be nice to be shown a little respect in the interview. Anyways, the interview ends and I get an email stating that I had "positive feedback across the board" and that "I'd be a great fit on the BILL team". The recruiter then asks me to jump on a call. On the call, I'm told I'm a great fit but they decided to go with someone else. However, they want to see if they can find another role for me given how well I did in the interviews. I agree and after another day of waiting, they told me that they were unaware that they had also filled that role. I know business is business, but I just wish that I had been treated with the same respect that I had given this company throughout the interview process. Most of the engineering folks there seem very nice and pleasant to work with, as well as some of the recruiters, but things felt very poorly run as a whole and I would advise most folks to not interview with BILL.

The interviewers were very friendly and made sure I am not getting overwhelmed. They focused more on my collaboration and thinking process rather than me solving the questions.

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at BILL (Palo Alto, CA) in Jun 2019

      Interview

Bill.com recruiter reached via LinkedIn. Had a brief call with him regarding background and experience. He was very prompt through out the interview process. Then there was 1hour telephonic interview with the hiring manager. In two days they sent an email regarding on-site interview dates. On-site was scheduled 2 weeks later. I had a great time talking to the Bill.com team. Some of the sweetest and nicest people I met. The office is small but the team culture looked really good. This was my first interview in 3 years and I was't that well prepared, but interview was fairly straightforward. Only thing I did not like about the interview process is I got a call from recruiter the next day of on-site interview saying he is still waiting to get feedback and he will let me know. But after that for a week there was no response at all. After a week when I reached out to the recruiter asking for feedback, they replied after 2 days saying it's a No. If it was a No the recruiter could have said it on call the same day or sent an email on the same day he called. Why was there call in first place and then so much delay in conveying feedback. This seemed a little off otherwise a good experience overall.
