I applied online. I interviewed at Barnardo's (Kilmarnock, Scotland) in May 2026
Interview
Applied for store associate job for Barnardo's on Indeed and didn't think much of it as I thought it was just a regular retail role and when I got to the interview the recruiters interviewing me were lovely, they made me feel very welcome and made the interview process feel natural.
However, I barely got into the interview before I was turned away for my age as the role was in actuality a key baring role which came with a certain age limit, this wasn't advertised in the listing at all and was absolutely gutted when I found out they couldn't continue the interview because of that.
Overall, lovely people and great attempts to make a calm and inviting atmosphere but they need to learn how to properly advertising so that there is no further confusion made and that this time can be spent interviewing more candidates that fit the restrictions required for this role as well as explaining what the role properly entails.

Interview
Very casual and friendly, just ask you two simple questions like why you want to work at barnado's and why retail. You pretty much just discuss your shift timings on the spot and beginning soon as training is finished

Interview
Online application, an interview 4 weeks later. A really bad experience...
I'd asked for some reasonable adjustments, but I was unable to have the questions beforehand and other adjustments wern't not met. There was a panel of two, and they had no interest in me at all. There was no warmth, smiling, putting me at ease. For a disability confident organisation that also strives for inclusion, this didn't happen on this occasion. It seemed apparent that my application hadn't been properly read and that someone else already had the job. I had the first interview slot of the day.
The research I had done on questions to expect never came up, their values, strategy, and history. The interview was 45 minutes and was told I would hear something after 3 working days. I had an email 4 weeks later from the national recruiting to say I was unsuccessful.
