I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Butte Humane Society (Chico, CA) in Jan 2011
Interview
Applied online through a Craiglist ad. Saw they were looking for a Volunteer Program Manager, full-time, Bachelor's degree required. Got a phone call to come in for an interview and was forewarned that the salary would only be $10.00 an hour. I drove 3 hours to the interview anyway, and walked into the door of the office. The space itself was very small, the work culture provided me with an abundance of red flags. I smiled and said hello and not one person returned the smile to me. It was very quiet and awkward. I mean, its an animal shelter organization, you would expect some enthusiasm from the people there, right?
Was interviewed by a panel of three in the back room next to the copy machine - they all sat on a worn out sofa while I sat on a hard chair - without a desk in front of me so they could see my entire body, which made me insecure about my posture.
Interview questions were very detailed and brought out important aspects of the job such as working conditions, etc. The person would be in charge of over 500 volunteers (again, $10 an hour for that?!) and in the last 2 year, they told me, they went through six people who quit the position. I would have gladly done it since I was planning on going to graduate school PT at night and money would have been the least of importance, but overall, they didn't sound very confident in their organization being "sound."
