      Scientist Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at CNA Corporation (Arlington, VA) in Nov 2023

      Interview

In Nov 2023 a recruiter reached out re a Scientist position. The salary was a lot less than I was expecting and throughout the process there were many red flags, several came from HR and one from the hiring manager. The overall hiring process felt excessive, this included: Writing a personal statement Submitting a 30 page writing sample Writing a 7 page case study Meeting with director Giving a 90 minute presentation Having a panel interview Onsite interviews for 4 hours I stopped at the 90 minute presentation. Had it been a reasonable 15 to 20 minutes, I would have moved forward. It took many hours to research and respond to the case study, and it would have taken many hours to prepare a 90 minute presentation. I really enjoyed talking to the director but I felt they were asking for too much unpaid labor.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

It’s 2010 and Congress has decided that the Pentagon has goten too big and that there is too much “bureaucra􀆟c bloat” – meaning that it takes too long to make decisions and that, despite the percep􀆟on that the work has not increased, the number of people working at DOD headquarters has increased substan􀆟ally over the last 30 years. Consequently, Congress has legislated a 25% cut in personnel to all offices in the Pentagon. Your sponsor, an office in the Pentagon, has asked you to help it accommodate this 25% cut. Op􀆟ons include everything from simply elimina􀆟ng posi􀆟ons but keeping the work and the structure the same to completely revamping all processes and the structure of the office. 1. How would you determine the best path forward for this office to get to a 25 percent cut in personnel? 2. Which resources above would you use, and how? 3. What else might you ask for? 4. What other questions would you want answered? 5. What assumptions might you need to make?
