Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis Interview

      16 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Canonical (New York, NY) in Aug 2023

      Interview

Your time is precious - do not waste it on Canonical. Do not apply to this company. Do not work for this company. Perhaps most importantly, do not be like this company. Suggestions for better uses of your time: reading a book, going for a walk outside, writing this Glassdoor review, networking with real humans for other roles, and spending time with loved ones. There was no interview. This was a case study. The case study was laborious, time consuming, and full of irrelevant questions to the role in question. While this is purported to 'reduce bias' it just ends up being a ridiculous waste of time for both candidate and company. A simple phone screen at the inception of an interview could align a candidate's background with the role's needs. By way of example (see full list of questions below), I have been out of high school for 18 years. My interests and performance in it have zero relevance to performing a job in my mid-30's. I 'passed' this stage of the interview process and was asked to perform an even more asinine series of logic tests that bore resemblance to the mind-numbing corporate training sessions of a Fortune 500. I did not ‘pass’ this stage. Thank goodness.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Describe your experience in technology subscription businesses Describe your involvement and experience in fund-raising and/or IPO processes What do you consider your most relevant experience for this role? Describe your experience in a start-up or high growth business, the challenges faced and examples of how you resolved these challenges? Insights What do you consider to be the most critical metrics in a business such as ours, and how have you helped a business to manage those metrics in your previous roles? How do you see the role of the Finance function in driving the business, preparing us for an IPO, and ensuring we are equipped to operate as a public company? What are the most challenging aspects of preparing for an IPO? How would you measure your own success in this role? Context Outline your thoughts on the mission of Canonical. What is it about the company's purpose and goals which is most appealing to you? What do you see as risky or unappealing? Who are Canonical's key competitors, and how should Canonical set about winning? Why do you most want to work for Canonical? What would you most want to change about Canonical? What gets you most excited about this role? We consider academic results in high school and university for all roles, regardless of seniority or department. To enjoy a long and varied career at Canonical, one would need to tackle problems that cannot be defined today! From engineering to marketing to operations and sales, we intensely value colleagues who are able to puzzle through difficult problems and find the optimal path forward. How did you rank in your high school, in your final year in maths and hard sciences? Which was your strongest? How did you rank in your high school, in your final year in languages and the arts? Which was your strongest? Please state your high school graduation results or university entrance results, along with the system used, and how to understand those. For example, in the US, you might give your SAT or ACT scores. In Germany, you might give your scores 1-5. What sort of high school student were you? Outside of class, what were your interests and hobbies? What would your high school peers remember you for, if we asked them? Which university and degree did you choose? What other universities did you consider, and why did you select that one? At university, did you do particularly well at any area of your degree? Overall, what was your degree result and how did that reflect on your ability? In high school and university, what did you achieve that was exceptional? What leadership roles did you take on during your education?
