Question 1
Tell me about a time when you had to persuade a group of people to do a task that you yourself were not excited about or on boared with?
I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at CarMax (Oxnard, CA) in Apr 2022
Interview
The interview process is relatively easy. Considering the amount of time it takes to get a face to face interview you would think it would be more challenging once you're in front of a hiring manager. Between the hour plus online application process, the 1.5 hour phone interview you would think you're being hired for a highly sensitive division of the company. In realtiy the recruiter you'll be speaking with is there to squash any pre-determined expectations as well as to make sure you understand EXACTLY what your signing up for. The recruiter will clearly explain exactly where you can go in the company as well as what it will take from you to get there. Once you accept the conditions the recruiter will brief you on the upcoming steps and provide you with with a list of relatively common interview questions along with online resources to learn more about life at Carmax.
Once seated in a face to face interview you'll hear about your hiring managers experience/history with the company as well as another person from the division you're applying for. In my case the hiring manager was having a bad morning. It was evident by his body language and tone at the start of the interview. The senior buyer I was also sitting with appeared to have zero interview experience. The whole thing had a person in training feel to it. In one instance both gentlemen asked me the same question at different times during the interview process (one or the other had already asked specific questions i had already answered.) When it came time for me to ask any questions about the corporation or the position, I only had two. I asked about life at Carmax. Even though there is plenty to read about online its a solid question to ask, getting input from an employee will help you understand what it's really like. The second question I asked was about the buying process, primarily to get an idea of the day to day routines.
At closing the hiring manager indicated the interview went very well and was "a great time." He had let me know he needed to communicate with the recruiter and that someone will contact me to set up a final interview. He also let me know the final interview would be approximately 2 hours, a sort of warning to be prepared (not hungry etc.)
I had a total of 5 hours invested to this point and did not receive a final interview. A bit excessive for an entry level position that requires a minimum of 6 months training.
