      Data Engineer Interview

      31 Jan 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Catalist, LLC in Nov 2023

      Interview

I initially got a screening call by the director of people and culture - sort of like a recruiter screening. Then they sent me an assessment, its been 2.5 months since I got a response on the assessment, all they say is the hiring team is reviewing the assessments and we will get back to you soon.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

There were questions on SQL and a couple of basic coding questions in high level language and shell.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We take our candidate experience and hiring process very seriously and appreciate any and all feedback that we receive about it. That said, we'd like to encourage you to double-check that you posted this review with the correct company. We do not have a process of holding four rounds of interviews for any role we are looking to fill, our interviews don't include such a question, and we have not interviewed for a Data Engineer role in over seven months. If you did intend to leave this review for a different company, you will be able to make that correction.

      Data Engineer Interview

      27 Aug 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Washington, DC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Catalist, LLC (Washington, DC) in Jul 2022

      Interview

First screening with the data chief officer. Was pretty simple, just a conversation about your skills and a resume. Then, they give you a giant assessment hosted through Hackerrank. It says you won't spend more than 3-4 hours but in fact, it took me 2 full days to finish it. They give you 3 days. You will find some simple logic questions, as well as leetcode medium and hard coding along with a couple of database questions. If they like your assessment, they invite you to the final round. They don't have an HR person and all communication is managed between you and a data chief officer. The communication is terrible, I have never been treated with less respect than this. The DCO responds once in 10 days, and you almost have to beg him for a response. Although I was invited to the "last round", DCO never scheduled one for me. The who application process took like 2 months. Guys, I would recommend focusing on other opportunities and just skipping this one. Pure waste of time. For reference, the last round would be a 30-60min discussion with management and a couple of virtual whiteboard questions on databases. Don't waste your time like me. Stay away. Very unprofessional.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They are on hackerrank and you will have 3 days. Write a query to return a list of professor names and their associated courses for all courses outside of their department. There should be no duplicate rows, but they can be in any order.

I'm so sorry to read that you had such a disappointing experience as one of our candidates, but I also deeply appreciate your feedback. As a result of what you shared, we're revisiting the content of the assessment for our Data Engineer positions for the future, and we're taking steps to ensure an open and consistent communication stream for candidates throughout the hiring process. While I don't expect this response to change your opinion or make up for the poor experience you've shared, I do hope that the fact that your review is prompting action that will benefit future candidates demonstrates that your time is valued. I wish you the best of luck with your job search!
