      Innovation Manager Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Church & Dwight

      Interview

Landed the first interview very quickly - HR got back to me within a couple of days of submitting my application. I for some reason decided to ignore the fact that health insurance was not part of the benefits package (there are kind of no benefits really as far as I could tell), but I decided to interview with them anyway just out of curiosity. The first interview was with the potential line manager and red flags began to appear very early on. The interview was only 30 minutes long and the manager was nearly 20 minutes late. They barely acknowledged it / barely apologised and just jumped straight into the questions about my experience. The meeting of course went on for 30 minutes as originally planned and they did not seem overly concerned about the fact that maybe I had other meetings and commitments to go to. Throughout the interview I just kept getting the impression that the company is super strapped for cash - seems like half of the functions which are normally present in a standard FMCG company (such as CMI) are basically absent. There was a lot of emphasis on "yeah we are a really lean company and we need you to hit the ground running." (ahem, translation: we are very understaffed). Also was interesting to watch the hiring manager practically have a stroke on camera as I asked them about what did they like about working at Church & Dwight - the answer was basically "nothing" dressed up in a bouquet of different platitudes. Things got kind of wild the next day when I received an email from the HR contact saying that the hiring manager would like me to proceed to the next stage of the interviewing process and for that I was expected to come in in person into their office AFTER 5PM, and (hold onto your hats!) give them TWO PRESENTATIONS and I was expected to present for 1 HOUR: one presentation on a product I've managed from ideation to launch in my previous role (40 minutes) and one presentation on a potential product Church & Dwight could launch for one of their brands (20 minutes). (ooh I smell idea mining! Because nothing says "we value you" as making you work for free) Now: here is the punchline: do you know how soon they wanted me to come in and do those presentations? THE NEXT DAY. i.e. they were giving me less than 24 hours to pull together two strategy decks. It was late afternoon when I received the email, and somehow I was presumably expected to drop my work, drop all of my commitments, not sleep for the whole night and just work on those strategy decks for them to then come in IN PERSON the next day after 5 PM. The timing they gave me was pretty non-negotiable, it felt very much like a "deal with it" kind of instruction. I withdrew my application pretty much instantly. The whole process just reeked of disrespect towards their employees/prospective employees and gave me pretty unhinged vibes.
