      Interview

Started out with a recruiter call. It seemed to go well so was moved onto the phone screen. The phone screen went well so we moved onto the onsite. The onsite didn't go well and I didn't get an offer. The whole process was sloppy and not well organized. Felt like I dodged a bullet.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Codecademy (New York, NY) in Mar 2020

      Interview

In the initial phone screen, I got to learn a lot about Codecademy and what is on the future roadmap. The technical screen is outsourced to another company. You are asked a series of small technical questions and solve a problem. You are video recored the entire time. The questions are language and programming fundamentals. You will also get a code snippet and need to determine what is invalid and how to fix it. The programming question is difficult. The video recording and code is sent back to Codecademy for review. You can retake the interview within 24 hours and both recordings are sent to Codecademy for review. Overall, I thought the technical phone screen was cold. It felt awkward being recored. Also, I would have preferred working through a question with a potential coworker. It helps interviewees have more insight into the technical culture.

Thank you for this feedback. This is helpful. We do our best to give a great interview experience, and we meet weekly to improve based on feedback from candidates or the team. The ideal would be to conduct all technical screens in-house. Unfortunately, that’s not possible given that our screeners are also our engineers, and we get a lot of applicants. We partnered with Karat to help create as objective of a screening experience as possible, and we continuously calibrate to address any concerns. Karat offers a diverse set of interviewers and allows candidates the flexibility to interview nights and weekends so that their day-to-day is not impacted as much. Then we proceed with our in-person interviews with our team from there. That said, we have taken this feedback to heart and are developing take home projects so that candidates have a choice to do either a take home (reviewed by the Codecademy team) or a Karat interview. Again, thank you. I’m sorry you didn’t have the best experience, and I hope we can learn and be better for others in the future.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Codecademy

      Interview

I spoke briefly with an internal recruiter who was not overly enthusiastic. They offered to move me on to the next phase, which was either an outsourced HackerRank type video screen, that would be reviewed by the company, or a take home. I opted for the take home in pursuit of a more personal interview process. The take home is a CodeSandbox React app with a slew of requirements, and "Delighters" (pick 2), that you must complete. The suggested time is 2-3 hours, but anyone with real world knowledge who wants to do a halfway decent job will need more time. The recruiter sent a rejection with no feedback; when asked for feedback, they responded with "code quality" and "please try again in a few years". The overall process was impersonal and vague. Given the time investment of these take home exercises, the lack of transparency and feedback was disheartening. Anyone requesting multiple hours of work should be prepared to respond with well formed feedback; I received no indication that the work had even been reviewed. Given the mission statement for Codecademy as a whole, I was expecting a more open and constructive process.

Complete a React app for a multiple choice quiz.

Thank you for sharing. We take pride in being a feedback driven culture and try to inject that into the interview process as well. I am sorry that you did not feel the detail of the feedback you were provided was enough to help you improve. We assure you that your assignment was reviewed by at least two members of our technical team. In the future, we would also encourage any candidate applying through an agency to reach out to the agency for feedback as well. Again, thank you for sharing. I’m sorry you didn’t have the best experience, and I hope we can learn and be better for others in the future.
