      Engineering Manager Interview

      Application

The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at CourseStorm in Jul 2024

      Interview

My experience with the CourseStorm interview process began with being reached out to on LinkedIn by the hiring manager. We scheduled a call so I could learn more about CourseStorm, be asked some initial questions, and decide whether to apply. After my application, I was contacted quickly by HR and went through the first official interview round, a 45 minute screening call that included time for my questions. After that call, I was asked to complete an assessment called the Individual Directions Inventory - kind of like a Meyers Briggs assessment, but with a focus on what motivates and engages you. The assessment took around 20 minutes to complete and there was a 45 minute follow-up with HR to discuss my results, which I appreciated as the assessment was new to me and it was helpful to have someone walk me through the report. As I understand it, the assessment isn't something that makes or breaks your interview, but it helps the hiring team understand how the things that motivate and engage you fit in with the team. The next round was a 60 minute call with the hiring manager again, this one a more formal complement to our first conversation, and the final round was a three hour block of 60 minute interviews with other people I would be working closely with, including the engineers who would be reporting to me. CourseStorm is a remote work company, so all interviews were over Zoom which was convenient. I always had time at the end of each interview to ask my own questions. One set of interviewers sent their behavioral/situational questions to me ahead of time, which was really helpful in making sure I had specific examples for their questions. This also helped us have deeper conversations in the interview itself rather than dead air while I thought of an example. Occasionally the interviewers would ask an unplanned question based on something I'd just said and they encouraged me to take a moment to think, which was appreciated. There wasn't a technical/coding piece to this interview process, but my experience with coding and my ability to mentor and up-skill the engineering team was a strong focus of conversation. Interview questions overall were perceptive, detailed, and felt personalized to my background. There were no gotchas or puzzles or tricky behavioral questions - the questions were simply very well designed to determine if my experience aligned with CourseStorm's needs. Coming out of each interview, I felt like I had had intense but positive conversations about what I could bring to CourseStorm. Overall, this was one of the best interviewing experiences I've had. I felt like I understood the team I would be joining, their needs, and the challenges of the organization at that point in time. I also felt that I got to showcase my strengths to the best of my abilities. It was a relatively quick process slowed down slightly by summer vacations - about 5-6 weeks from the time I was first reached out to until the time I received an offer.

      Question 1

Given that my experience was with larger companies, what did I feel the pros and cons were in working at a smaller company like CourseStorm, and how did I feel about my ability to make that transition?
