      Application

      I interviewed at Cubby Beds

      Interview

Completely fill out application with several open ended questions you must answer. Then one of the very last requests is to record a video of yourself. Sorry, but with all the data breaches, etc. I am still on the fence about this style of interviewing. I don't want videos of myself circulating in yet the never ending online data bases across the web. Additionally, a recorded video opens the door to further bias based application decisions. Having my consideration at least partially dependent on a video recording is a slippery slope. And let's be real, humans will naturally be compelled to be interested in the individuals that look the part, have the perfect mannerisms and are basically great performers on video. Namely, extroverted actors, theater and performer types and the list goes on around socio economic status, race, gender - a recorded video tells me you that "looks" and "performance" is key to being successful at Cubby. Also, I would suggest making this video requirement one of the first requests on the application. I wasted time answering the application questions only to find out you require a recorded video as well.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about our application process. We appreciate your openness and want to address your concerns regarding the video submission portion of our applications. We want to assure you that we take candidate data privacy very seriously. All candidates can request the removal of any data they’ve provided as part of the application process (including the video) through our Careers page by clicking the “Data & privacy” button on the bottom. The purpose of the video is to provide an opportunity for candidates to better introduce themselves in a challenging job market when people often feel like they're just one of many in a stack of resumes. This also helps Cubby conduct a more personal assessment of candidates, including evaluation of communication and presentation skills (when applicable for the role), increasing our efficiency and effectiveness in screening large applicant pools to ensure the best use of everyone's time. While we understand your concern about bias, we have designed the video prompts to focus on the candidate's interest in Cubby Beds and interest in the role. We train our hiring team to evaluate these videos based on the content of the responses and their relevance to the position's requirements only, and we do not ask for videos when those skills are not as necessary for success in the role. We recognize that unconscious bias is a real concern, and we are continually working to refine our process to minimize its impact. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention as it helps us in this effort. We also acknowledge your feedback regarding the placement of the video request in the application. You're right – it's important for applicants to be aware of all requirements upfront. We are currently reviewing our application process with our new Senior Recruiter and will take your suggestion into consideration to ensure greater transparency for future applicants. We want to be respectful of every candidate’s time and efforts. Thank you again for your feedback. We value your perspective and wish you the best in your job search. Sincerely, The Cubby Beds People Team
