      Attorney Aide Interview

      25 Oct 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Diego, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at DLA Piper (San Diego, CA) in Jun 2013

      Interview

This is overdue, but it's so outrageous and strange that I feel like I need to share. In 2012, I interviewed for an atypical position to be an attorney aide to a partner who is quadriplegic. Essentially I would have accompanied her to all of her meetings, written emails on her behalf, taken notes for her, etc. I had just graduated from paralegal school and I was really excited about the possibility of attending partner meetings and learning from one of the most prestigious lawyers at the firm. Unfortunately, my interview was a disaster. First of all, the attorney was belligerent and condescending. She even accused me of knowing nothing about business when I mentioned something about liking the pro bono matters she and the firm were involved in. The most astonishing part was that she told me that I would work 12 hour shifts and only be able to sit on a stool. She stated that I would not be offered a chair under any circumstances so I "better not have back problems." First of all, that is a blatantly illegal thing to base a hiring decision off of and secondly, wasn't she in a wheelchair hiring an assistant to accommodate her? But heaven forbid the assistant have back problems. Her other assistant met with me privately and had nothing nice or positive to say. She talked about how awful the job was. I actually laughed on the way to my car. I was half expecting to be featured on Punked. Absolutely absurd. I've never experienced something so unprofessional and I've never recommended DLA to anyone, nor will I ever.

      Interview

      1. Video Interview - very impersonal and embarrassing! 2. In person Interview with the Partner and HR. It was much easier and laid back than the video interview. It was very conversational and few interview style questions were asked. 3. Typing and Microsoft Word tests 4. Final In Person Interview with Partner - Again, very conversational.

      Anonymous employee
      San Diego, CA
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at DLA Piper (San Diego, CA) in Jan 2018

      Interview

I received a Digital Interview request and an online skills assessment test. As other reviewers have noted, the digital interview was far tougher than an in person interview. The company says that this style of interviewing creates fairness, but I strongly disagree. I was not able to perform as well as I would have conversationally in person. In future opportunities, I have made the decision to avoid all digital interview requests.
