      Terrible Interview Experience/Operations Innovation Manager Interview

      I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at DaVita (Denver, CO) in Aug 2012

      Interview

      During the pre-screen, the recruiter stated several times that people in "your industry make a lot of money." I asked her for the basis of that statement and she said her friends work in my industry and told her how overpaid we are. The hiring mgr emailed me within 10 minutes to schedule a phone interview in two hours. I conducted a 40 min phone interview with the recruiter, and a 30 minute phone interview with a mgr and director. They spent 10 min telling me all about the company, asked me to recap my resume, told me about the position, and asked me questions about the role. Afterward, the time allotted was up and I had no chance to ask questions. I was invited for a face-to-face; this would require flying from DC to CO. This is where it began to go downhill and the red flags began to show. It a week & a dozen emails to coordinate a simple plane trip. The hiring mgr sent me an itinerary, which I approved. Days later I received my final travel itinerary and everything was changed: Wrong airport, connecting flights, different times. I was put up at hotel, but at check in learned it hadn't been paid for and ended up paying out of pocket. The interview was a 5-part, round robin with a tour of the facility and mtg with eight different people for 30 minutes each. This had all been discussed in advance, and I was given specific instructions regarding the presentation I was to deliver. After the tour, I was told the interviews would begin. There were two of us interviewing, but they couldn't figure out which of us was supposed to meet with whom/when. The interview itinerary was on my phone, but when I pulled it out to help I got a very disapproving look. This happened after each interview. Also, while they were rushing me through my mtgs, the other interviewee's mtgs were running long thus shortening mine. Mtg #1: Presentation round. I was told to give a 20 min presentation. After less than 5 minutes, the interviewer stopped me and told me "Just get to the point; let's cut to the chase: What was the final outcome?" So I advanced my presentation and shared the results. Then he asked "But how did you get there?" So I showed him. Then he questioned how it could be possible, so I walked him through the process. I gave both interviewers hard copies of the presentation, which I was delivering via laptop. Mtg #2 Problem solving round. They began by explaining that they'd pose a situation and have me identify 3 people I would discuss the issue with and 3 questions I would ask. The reality is that they asked me to role-play, not explaining that one of the interviewers would be those people to whom I would ask my questions. This, and the fact that they seated me between the two interviewers, made it very awkward. I later learned that these hypothetical were situations they'd solved; the interviewers wanted answers that validated their experiences and thus they were unwilling to accept new ideas or alternate ways of thinking/problem solving. Mtg #3 Team fit 1. The lead interviewer was one of the people with whom I had interviewed on the phone. He started off the mtg by saying "I've already read your resume and spoke with you on the phone, so just tell [the other interviewer] what you've been doing for the past few years." So I offered her a copy of my resume, and then I launched into a topical, entirely germane recap of my professional experiences. I made sure to speak to both of them and noticed that during the entire interview, the lead looked completely bored and half asleep. Mtg #4 Team fit 2. This one too was with the hiring mgr I spoken with by phone. She did the same thing: tell the other interviewer about yourself. The second interviewer interrupted me at one point and told me that while my resume, education and credentials were impressive, he thought my methodology (which is the industry standard for this position) was too rigorous for what they do and how they approach their tasking. So I very politely countered and explained how customizable the methodology is and how it was an influencer in ways of thinking and doing. When I finished that, the lead said "Well, we don't have any questions for you. Is there anything you would like to ask us?" So I asked a list of questions, all of which I received fluff, meaningless responses. They took me out of the office, and the lead interviewer pulled the other interviewer aside and spoke with him about me--with me standing about five feet away. She made a very disappointed-looking face and then walked away without even acknowledging me or saying goodbye. He then said he'd escort me out of the building and told me to take care and that they'd be in touch within 2 days. A week later I got the call that I was not selected. I wrote her to thank her for following up and the opportunity to interview, she did not even bother to respond.

      The questions were not difficult; however, what was difficult was dealing with a team that was is ill-prepared, unqualified, and frankly quite unprofessional.
