DPD uses a fairly typical scenario based assessment for the applicant interview boards. Board members make sure to explain to candidates that the grading of the scenarios will be based on the rules for handling a situation that are provided at the beginning of the interview. Candidates are given a moment to familiarize themselves with the rules, then asked to recite them back to insure understanding. All candidates are told that it is understood that they may not have formal experience and should use these rules as a guideline on how to respond to the scenarios. Candidates are not expected to know exactly how to respond to the scenarios, only to be able to follow instructions and learn from mistakes.
