      Data Science Instructor Interview

      26 Jan 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Boston, MA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at DataRobot (Boston, MA) in Jan 2016

      Interview

A series of Google Hangout interviews was held over a 6-week period. Since the company is a startup, I had the opportunity to speak to everyone, including one of the co-founders. Topics varied from machine learning to experience in classroom instruction. Basically, you pass through a series of checkpoints, which ultimately leads to speaking with the guys at the top. Apparently, DR has a product that is accessible to data scientists without the requisite programming experience. Although many of the employees have enjoyed success on Kaggle, I do not believe they have any idea of what it takes to develop scaleable models in production environments; however, I think they have found a profitable niche in the market. The interviewers were friendly enough, but even if you think it may be going well, ultimately you have no idea of the outcome. I demonstrated maximum flexibility in terms of the long interview process, but in the end I received a brief Email from the secretary with no offer. Very classy.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1. How would you describe a ROC curve to a student? 2. Explain some of the machine learning topics that you have taught to others. 3. Describe your Python pipeline.
