      Alterations Interview

      13 Apr 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Greenwood, IN
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at David's Bridal (Greenwood, IN) in Apr 2013

      Interview

Originally, my daughter brought home the application. She received it from the alterations manager when the manager overheard my daughter say my mom can hem that for you when she and others were trying on dresses for a bridal party. The manager handed her an app. and wrote alterations at the top of it. That was two months ago. I filled it out and took it in on Monday. Alterations manager asked me to come back on Friday for the sewing test. I did. I was asked to do a rolled hem, which she showed me how to do. Then I had to rip out a zipper and sew a new one into a dress. The zipper foot is awesome. I had never sewn on an industrial machine and she let me practice for a while since once the presser foot is pressed it can take off like a race horse. This took about two hours. Ripping out the zipper took the longest. Then the manager asked me a few questions like. How did I learn to sew? What type of sewing had I done. General questions. Alter. Mgr also told me there was a dress code. Had to wear a jacket and dress shoes. She then took me to the Store manager and I talked with her. Store manager asked me questions. Like what was the most stressful day at a job, and how I dealt with it. What was my favorite part of selling. I would be selling my services to customers. I needed to upsell, or try and sell extra services. The store manager took my app. and said she would give it to the alterations mgr. The store was clean and it seemed the help were amicable. Back in the sewing room the girls were nice but attended to their work and they seemed happy with what they were doing and the atmosphere they worked in.

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at David's Bridal (Alexandria, LA) in Aug 2014

      Interview

the current alterations manager who hired me at time as an alterations specialist was very nice. She was quiet but still friendly and I'd love to have been a part of her department. However, she never returned after I was hired. The interview process is casual dressy clothing. White top and black pants. Alterations department requires closed toe shoes. I had a piercing in my eyebrow when I was interviewed and hired. However when I clocked in for work, I was told I couldn't have any piercings. I felt like this was a bit shady. I was no told any wages until after I was hired and watched the orientation videos and then offered $10 per hour to start. I think this is TOO CHEAP considering the skills needed to do the work in this particular department and sewing in general. I have never took outside sewing orders for ten dollars an hour. They don't provide wage info until after they decide if they want you. People with less experience than I had was given more per hour when I left....because they knew someone else in the upper management part of the store or company. Its a very biased company.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

how long have you been sewing. what kind of machines do you use. can you sew bridal gowns or do alterations. what days are you available. The ask you to do an actual sewing test on a hem or taking up shoulders to make sure you know what you are doing.
