      Product Manager Interview

      15 Jan 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 1 week. I interviewed at DoiT (New York, NY)

      Interview

Looks like a great company, terrible experience with their recruiter. Two key things that weren't mentioned in the job description. First, the hiring manager is American and US-based. This can cause a big gap in mentality as the Israeli and American job interview culture is very different. Second, they put a big emphasis on their high pace with "daily releases". The experience was poor irrespective of the fact the role does not suit me. The recruiter called me post-interview. Rather than begin with the status - as is customary - she started with the feedback. This is wrong on two levels. One - a candidate is anxious to hear what his status is which is why you need to start out with the response rather than stress him out. Two - a candidate only has one thing on his mind with the status question unanswered. In that setting, he will not gain much from feedback. In a subsequent conversation, I mentioned this to the recruiter and got a defensive rebuttal about how I don't understand HR. The second thing is that while making her third point, I respectfully said that while I accept the majority of the feedback, I think that unfortunately due to the inherent limits of an interview (and possibly the culture difference), the recruiting manager got the wrong idea about the pace of the environment that I currently work in. I explained why I thought this was the case, why the limits of an interview came into play here and why I believe my specific case is an outlier which the interview proxy used misses out on. The astonishing response was that I don't need to take the feedback as reflecting upon my skills or my current workplace, that they did get a good impression of me, that I don't need to get defensive and lectured me how I might not know this but it's customary to give feedback and finally that if I were better, the manager would've gotten the right impression. In her eyes, disagreement is defensiveness, they're always flawless and feedback is a one way street. Poor.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. It sounds like the role was fundamentally not what you were hoping for, but it’s our goal to provide every candidate with a great experience regardless of whether or not they ultimately join the DoiT team. Our Recruiter had the best of intentions when reaching out to convey some feedback you might find helpful in the future, but I'm sorry that wasn’t your experience. Your comments will help our Talent Acquisition team refine our approach to delivering feedback going forward. We wish you the very best. - Kristen Tronsky, Chief People Officer
