I submitted an application online for Receptionist (aka Bartender) positions anticipated with a new Drybar location opening in Southern California. A representative from HR invited me to RSVP for the company's local "audition" or group interview process.
The audition was held at a hotel ballroom located nearby the new salon. Approximately three-dozen candidates attended the audition. Upon check-in, everyone completed a paper application - even if we had already submitted one online. The group was divided into two - our chairs were arranged into two large circles - and we were provided with an orientation to the company. As written by a previous interviewee, the next hour or so was comprised of the following three activities: 1) work with a partner (aka "your new best friend") to introduce her/him to the rest of the group; 2) work in teams of 4 or 5 to create a Drybar commercial that provides at least 3 facts; 3) examine an elastic lace strap and share how you would use it (besides as a hair tie).
A big challenge with the first activity was that the Drybar representatives had music playing in the background at a loud volume. Everyone really had to project their voices louder than usual to compete with the background music.
At the conclusion of these activities, the selection committee took 5-10 minutes to evaluate before calling candidates back into the ballroom by groups for the results of the audition.
