      Data Platform Manager Interview

      10 Sept 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Envato in Jun 2019

      Interview

A screening process with the recruiter followed by an interview with the Analytics Director. There we concluded that I was a better fit for the Data Platform role rather than the Analytics one. Another recruiter was hiring for that role but he was not very responsive so we managed to schedule the next interview only a month later. I was interviewed by a Senior Engineering Manager and the Data Platform Dev team lead. The interview only slightly touched the world of Data Warehousing, I think I was only asked two questions about it (what is a data lake, what is a good data warehouse) and then we spent our time on various topics, from goals setting to pair programming and on-call duties etc. We were jumping from one topic to another. After 30 minutes I had the chance to ask questions about how they're doing things. In the era of real-time analytics they have a data infrastructure that only refreshes once a day, and they said that they did not see a reason for more frequent sync. The team was migrating from SQL Server to a Redshift data warehouse for two years already, and when I asked them what caused the delay and what the challenges were, the lead answered that this was due to "aggressive business requirements towards the team" - a direct contradiction to their company values. I asked for an example of a big achievement from the team, and the answer was that they reduced the number of operational incidents, which to me showed a team without big ambitions. I was disqualified without getting any actual feedback. At that point I decided to offer them feedback on how I saw their team (really inexperienced with Data Warehousing, didn't spend time during the interview to understand how strong I was, etc). Two months later they got back to me saying that they completely agreed to my remarks, and they finally offered me some feedback. Some of the points did not reflect reality, for example they said I wasn't experienced with stakeholder management. In fact if they had asked me about that during the interview they would have found out that in my last two jobs a big part of my work was collaborating with VPs and C-level executives. Another interesting topic of the feedback was that I had no experience with on-call scheduling which apparently is very important to them. Data Warehousing operational availability, especially for a company the size of Envato, should not be an issue in the year 2019 and I'm really surprised that it's still a problem for them and needs to be solved with on-call duties, especially for a Data Warehouse that only refreshes once per day. All in all, this is the interview experience you get when the hiring team is not very experienced in their field.
