      Wedding Photographer Interview

      29 Jul 2022
      Anonymous employee
      Dallas, TX
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Epic Productions (Dallas, TX) in Jun 2022

      Interview

Interviewer was social and the company responded to emails, I was excited about this position but a lot went wrong. When they were arranging the interview, they asked if I wanted to interview over the phone, video, or in person. Since I lived out of state, I said phone or video, but then I got an email afterwards about slots for an in person interview and they emphasized that the job was competitive. I really wanted the job, so I moved a few days early so that I could have the chance to interview, but I didn’t like that they had asked for my preference and then didn’t value it. There was a video that the company sent beforehand about the job paying $300 per wedding, and when we got in, they said that the second shooter made $150. I wanted to accept anyways because I love weddings. I got offered the position, but later on they changed their minds and told me that I didn’t have the technical skill for the position, even though they had already reviewed my work and offered me the job. It hurt and I felt lied to. I did a shoot for them outside in 106 degree weather last minute to prove my ability because it was required, and it didn’t turn out great because my subject was hot & uncomfortable & I had just moved to Texas, so I didn’t know where would be a good place for the shoot. I was hoping that they would be gracious because it was last minute and they had me shoot with just my iphone on my own (I had asked to use one of their cameras) and I was new to Texas and it was during a heat wave, but they weren’t. I followed up with Epic later on after I got a studio photography job to try to get the wedding job back because they had said that it was about technical skill, but they still said the same thing later on too, even though I was qualified. During the interview, the employer said that he was constantly trying to replace the bottom 15% of his employees a few times, based on if the staff got good ratings from the brides (even if they did nothing wrong), so I didn’t feel like the photographers were protected. And he also said that the photographers who didn’t get 10/10 surveys from the brides (exceeding their expectations) didn’t advance to higher positions or receive as many weddings.
