      Ocean Procurement Interview

      11 Apr 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Flexport

      Interview

A recruiter from Flexport sent me a message on LinkedIn regarding the position and asked if I was interested. However I replied to the message and did not get a response. I then applied for the role on Flexport's website and set up an initial screening phone call. We set up a more formal video conference interview with members of two different teams. I wouldn't say the questions were super hard, but the pressure of trying to do case studies in an interview atmosphere (and via video conference) can get to you. Biggest advice would be to take your time and really read all the information presented. The actual calculations are not difficult as long as you do this. My main complaint is that I was repeatedly told that industry experience was not required, yet I was asked questions specific not only to the industry but to Flexport as well. I did my research, but felt it was impossible to know some of the answers that I was then critiqued on. This simply does not make sense to me and did not make me eager to work for the company. Everyone I spoke with was very nice and there were no scheduling issues, but I still did not get a very professional vibe. Language in communications was very informal and I felt that the process was not really designed for Flexport to understand who you are and what you can bring as an individual. For me, this just reinforced my reservations about the role. If you're goal is simply to be a part of the tech industry and culture, or if you are a recent graduate, than I think this could be a great place for you. People did seem positive about career development. However, I personally felt that Flexport oversells its importance and 'exciting' nature of its career opportunities. I actually feel like it could be missing out on a large pool of potentially valuable employees because recruitment is so focussed on certain things. This is common in SF, but is just not my cup of tea given my professional background. I was a little disappointed when I did not make it to the final stage, but this was primarily because I did not feel I performed at my best. However, in all honestly, I think I was also relieved because I knew this was not really the road I wanted to go down.
