      Technical Writer Interview

      6 May 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Diego, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at General Atomics (San Diego, CA)

      Interview

This was a phone interview with the Business Development Manager at the EMG division. It was set up by an individual at a staffing agency called Modis who gave the impression that she had dealt with GA on multiple occasions and she could see I was a great fit for the job. I had looked over the GA EMG website prior to the interview and knew I would be an excellent match for the job. Everything they were doing was well within my technical grasp, and I had many years of experience with the types of documentation they needed.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

1st question: something like "Which do you prefer, comma or semicolon for a list of items in a sentence?" Was not expecting that! My response was that I prefer a bulleted list because nobody reads long sentences with lists of items. Wrong answer, I guess! This set the tone for the interview, however, and it got me thinking, so I asked how important she thought it was for the technical writer to have a technical grasp of the product. The response: not very important! She was more concerned about the writer's ability to adapt to the style of an existing document. At this point, I pretty much knew I was wasting my time. She obviously thought I was some sort of knuckle-dragging ape who probably couldn't spell his own name. My last question to her was "Based on my resume and our conversation, do you see anything at all that gives you a concern about my ability to do this job?" Her response: No, I'll talk to the hiring manager about the next steps." A few days later I received the rejection email. My email to the individual at the staffing agency about what the hell happened went unanswered. I'm really disgusted with Modis and GA EMG!

      Application

I interviewed at General Atomics (Poway, CA)

      Interview

Got interviewed by a panel. Overall it was a great experience. On the panel there were a few engineers, some managers and some writers. It would have been a great fit, but unfortunately it was a contract position with the opportunity to get hired on, and I wasn't ready to leave my job for a maybe.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at General Atomics (Poway, CA) in May 2022

      Interview

Lots of people in the interview room which was intimidating but they were kind and receptive. Definitely be prepared to present a project that you've created. That part isn't too hard, they are just making sure you have the ability to present.

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at General Atomics

      Interview

Intensive, spoke with 3-4 different people, all pleasant. They were on a hiring freeze so they put the position on hold for a few months and then contacted me for a 2nd interview.
