      Senior Accessibility Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at GitHub in Sept 2023

      Interview

I spoke to an HR person who gave me a high-level overview of the job and the salary range. This was then followed up with a two-hour timed test you have to take before talking to the hiring manager. Against my better judgement (because testing candidates is an unethical and lazy interview practice, and I normally decline an interview if I get a test sent to me), I blocked out some time that week and took the test. The test was a design review of a GitHub component that you have to submit through GitHub as an issue. It's a general review of a GitHub component and doesn't give you a strong enough point of view to start from (are you giving accessibility feedback? Is it general UX? Technical feasibility? All of the above?) Regardless, the whole thing felt like I was doing free work for them. I then spoke to the hiring manager who asked some pretty general questions about my background and about accessibility. They didn't dig too deeply into my work or background. Two weeks later I got an auto-rejection email. For all of the time spent on a test and not enough time spent going in-depth in the actual interview, I would have expected some general feedback as to why I wasn't considered. Instead, the canned email doesn't tell you anything, and "encourages" you to apply for other roles. Why would I go through the trouble again? What a total waste of time. That was time I could have spent doing actual work to make actual money for an actual client. My advice? Never interview for any job that asks you to take a test beforehand or do work upfront.
