      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      5 Oct 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Gorgias (CA) (Toronto, ON) in Jul 2024

      Interview

Considering how easy the interview process was and their admission of starting a new engineering division in Toronto, I have reason to believe that this company didn't have an intention to hire anyone. The reasoning they gave me was regarding their platform's scale. It didn't seem to add up since I have adequate experience scaling web applications.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

A generic data manipulation exercise in hackerrank.

      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Gorgias (CA) in Feb 2025

      Interview

I was applied through headhunter. There are clear, understandable milestones that you have to pass. Screening, Interview with the Hiring Manager, Tech Design, Live-coding, and the final with the CTO. I passed by all of them, excluding the CTO step. The interviewers on the first steps were friendly and polite, well-prepared, and skilled. The hiring manager interview doesn't have something remarkable, pretty common, but still left a good impression. Tech design was also an absolutely common high-load system design, but it had some interesting questions. Many disappointments came with the life-coding step. They sent me a zip file with the project and asked me to check and run it. The Codebase of that project was extremely outdated, and the task looked very dull. I came to the interview, and the interviewers, instead of introducing themselves, started defining my Tech Design task; I stopped them and said that it had to be live coding. That was unexpected for them, and instead of preparing a project, they sent me a new task; it is ok, but why did I spend time on zip archive? The task also was very boring, but nothing difficult, every Junior can pass that step. After that recruiter asked about my experience and I provided honest opinion, I guess that was my mistake that ended my interview process. I had been declined due to lack of collaboration and adaptability, how they did evaluate it in live coding only God knows. Interview process was good until it faced low qualified people and it ruined overall experience.
