      Benefit Operations Analyst Interview

      3 Jun 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Gusto in May 2022

      Interview

My interview process with Gusto was extremely unprofessional. I would avoid opportunities at this company given my experience below. 1) Phone screen with the recruiter. The compensation for the role was extremely low for nyc, but I mentioned to the recruiter I would be interested in continuing the process (as I did not have a solid offer elsewhere). 2) 3 x 30 minute interviews with Benefits team. Note, these interviews were scheduled prior to me confirming or even providing my availability. Unprofessional. 3) I received an offer a few days following the interviews. Now this is where it gets bad. Once the offer was received, I spoke to the recruiter and voiced my concern regarding the low compensation. The recruiter said that was the target comp and there was nothing he could do. I asked again, noting i'm based in new york city, and he said he made a mistake and there's actually updated compensation bands that would increase the hourly rate. Interesting timing for a mistake, especially considering he had already said there was nothing he could do. The recruiter then said he would update the offer letter with the correct compensation and send it my way. 4) After this call, I didn't hear from the recruiter until late the next day. He asked to speak with me on the phone. It seemed he was unprepared for the phone call, because he verbatim said "how do i say this" then proceeded to tell me the hiring cap for my role was reached and I could no longer accept the offer for the company... He would have the reach out to his manager to see if additional hires would be allocated, such that I could start at a much later date. Excuse me?? So after extending an offer and making a "mistake" on comp, you're telling me the offer is no longer valid? I was shocked, but told him I'd be on the lookout for an update given I did not have another offer in hand. He eventually reached out with an updated offer in a couple weeks time, but the whole process, especially the rescinded offer (After 1 day) left a really bad taste in my mouth. I'm not one to write reviews, especially negative, but I'd like to help others avoid this unprofessional process (and likely company). TLDR: Interviews scheduled without confirmation, Wrong comp rate given was only corrected after I asked multiple times, Offer was rescinded after comp rate conversation due to "full headcount". New offer received for a much later start date weeks later. Avoid. There's much better opportunities out there unless this is your first remote "corporate" job and you're desperate.
