I got a surprisingly poorly written email from the Chief Administrative Office for the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, who invited me for an on-site interview. It was vague and didn’t inform me who exactly but I would be meeting with. I come in the following business week, and am met by the Director of the Program, who was friendly and professional. After a thorough and productive interview with him, he brought me to the Chief Administrative Officer’s Office, who came out in a rush and told me she forgot I was coming. What made this experience so unique was that she proceeded to bring me into a room, shut the door, and complained comprehensively about how incompetent her boss is and how miserable the job is I was applying to. The way in which she did this was whispering to me, out of some paranoia that the Director could hear her while he walked by the room, which just happened to have glass walls. The whole interview felt more like a therapy session for her rather than interviewing me.
