      General Warehouse Co-Worker Interview

      27 Feb 2012

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 2 days. I interviewed at IKEA in Jan 2012

      Interview

After submitting my application online, I got an e-mail to come in for a "hiring event" which was an event in which they had about maybe 30 people come in, for about 3 hours. They split us into groups, had us fill out an application again, but on paper.. and then they handed each group an item that they sold, and had us come up with what we thought it was, write down a description of it, other uses for the item, etc etc.. then we were handed a similar item, but had to write down the differences of it. We also were given other activities to do, which were really done to get an idea of how sociable we were, how well we worked in teams, etc etc.. after this, I was brought into a room for a one on one interview. It went well, was interviewed by a very friendly girl who was a manager there. After this, I was sent home and told I would be receiving a call within 3-4 days on whether I got the job or not. I didn't get the call until about a week later, and was told I'd be coming in for a second interview - this actually wasn't an interview, it was a job offer, which I accepted. I was given a form to bring over to a drug testing place, and they also printed out directions to the nearest facility. Again, the person who interviewed me was extremely nice. After this, I was told that if my drug test results came back good, I'd be hired and told when to come back for my "before the floor" training, which is just a training day, again with a large group of people.. this lasted about 8 hours, and it is a paid training day. We were given a tour of the store, our uniforms, and our schedules. I started 3 days after that, some people started the next day. All of the staff at Ikea are really great people.. the interview process was fun. Also, I'd like to give some insight on what exactly the warehouse/logistics position entails, as I was a little confused when I read the online description at their website, and also because I couldn't find a description anywhere, so if anyone is looking like I was, I hope this will help. There are three positions in logistics.. one is the drivers, who bring the merchandise into the warehouse. The second is receiving, which are the people that come in at 4 am to get the shipments off of the trucks and into the warehouse.. they use those things that you drive around that pick up boxes and can lift them up to high shelves.. they generally stay in the warehouse and self serve area (where customers pick up their boxed furniture before checkout.) Third, my department, is markethall. What I do is come in at 6am before the store opens, and unbox everything and put the products out where they belong, in the markethall. Which is the area where they sell plates, cups, rugs, sheets, pillows, bathroom supplies such as towels and things of that nature. I was extremely worried that once I was hired, the position wasn't what i thought it was.. the way they described the position made it sound as if I would be only in the warehouse, and driving around one of those jacks. Also, I was instructed to get a pair of steel-toed boots, which made me think I wasn't hired for what I thought I would be doing as well. Also, Ikea puts $65 towards a pair of boots, which goes into your first paycheck.. forgot to mention that. Luckily, I was placed in markethall which is exactly what I was hoping and thought the job would be. Ikea is a great place to work and I really like it so far.. anyways, I hope this helped anyone who's looking for what I was looking for, and I hope this eased your mind.
