Interview
I had an interview the week prior to the commencement of the job. I met with the head of HR, discussed my CV and experience and was told that I was probably hired and will be notified by Friday. They gave me all the information on the school and job and said that it started the next Monday. I said okay, that's fine. So I wait for a call. My boyfriend was hired the week before, so has more information on what will happen the next week. I wait for a call, but get none. So, I don't go to the orientation on Monday because I'm not certain that I have the job yet. My boyfriend returns, says he thinks I can come the next day because the woman whose job I'm supposed to have was fired that day. Okay, then, I go to work on Tuesday. Tuesday is an office meeting day and more orientation. We find out there are summer classes that start the next day. I meet with the head of our department and she seems unsurprised that I'm there. So- someone forgot to call and tell me I'm actually hired? That day we are assigned our hours for the next three weeks of summer school. No materials, no help, no discipline. I don't know any Turkish and was unaware how terrible Turkish students can be. I found out quickly that they only respond to yelling.
The school year begins after Ramazan. I'm supposed to be with the Kindergarten, but they haven't hired a teacher for grades 1 to 4 yet. Two weeks go by and they still can't find a teacher. I'm withdrawn from Kindie and put on those grades. No preparation, just teach. I have them all year because they never do find a teacher. I also end up taking Kindie once a week for a five hour straight session in the morning. Those classes are the same - no help with organizing for activities or discipline. Nothing.
Residence permit comes late because I was hired late? Yet was with everyone at the visa office prior to school starting. Can't get paid until you have a residence permit because you need one to open a bank account. So no payment for the first two months. I finally got paid at the start of November. I began working in August. Everything they owed me was there, but I was nervous that they would forget the housing supplement. They did, so had to remind them of it. That did turn up.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Nothing. They only wanted a body to fill the classroom. If you speak English, have a Bachelor's and some teaching experience, you'll get the job.
