      SEO Account Manager Interview

      11 May 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Innovation Visual (London, England) in Apr 2021

      Interview

After the first chat with them by phone, they invited me to a video call to discuss the position. When I joined the call I found out that the manager didn't have time to attend the call. Nobody in the SEO department attended either. Instead, the videocall was carried by an intern HR assistant reading me questions from a paper all the time. Another senior HR also joined, but she wasn't looking directly at me or asked me any questions. It didn't feel very professional or personal, as the questions were being read following a script from a paper. The questions were HR type of questions like "tell me about yourself, what do you know about us and why should we hire you" You couldn't ask anything related to the role because there was no specialist from the department present. However, without being asked about technical SEO issues or anything in-depth they were able to assess that "I didn't have enough depth of knowledge for their demanding position", according to their feedback email. Glassdoor won't allow me to copy-paste their feedback email. It will tell me to "delete the bad language". They are a very small company and the interview was not professional at all, but well, it's a learning journey for everyone. However, they could have some human touch while carrying the interview and when giving feedback to a candidate. Feedback should be constructive and there is no need to be rude to those that gave you their time to get to know your company/role.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Typical HR questions being read from a paper without establishing eye contact: "tell me about yourself", "what do you know about us" and "why should we hire you"

Thank you very much for applying for the role and for your feedback. Competition for this position has proven to be very high, with a great deal of high calibre candidates sending through their applications. We have a rigorous recruitment process, and to make it through to first interview you clearly demonstrated that you were amongst the top applicants. I'm sorry that you found the first interview a negative experience, we will be sure to review our processes to ensure that this is rectified going forward. Video calls make for a convenient medium for meetings and interviews, but of course, it can be difficult to establish eye contact when looking at the screen as opposed to the camera and also whilst taking notes, especially when this is done on a separate monitor. Again, this is something we can look to remedy for future interviews. You are quite right in identifying some of the more 'typical HR questions'. These are very valuable and we don't believe that they should be overlooked. At second interview is where we would really drill down into an applicant's experience, skills and critical knowledge. If you would like some further insight into why you were not progressed to second interview, please do feel free to get in touch and we can provide this. Thank you again for your feedback and we wish you all the best in your job search.
