      Consultant Interview

      28 Mar 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Boston, MA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2+ months. I interviewed at InterSystems (Boston, MA)

      Interview

I read very thoroughly reviews about this company on glassdoor and I was neutral when I had my interview - I used interview to learn more about the company. Interviewed by business development, sales dept. and few other depts. Business Dev. dept folks were friendly, talkative and interesting. Sales Dept. folks were less courteous - in fact they were flat out rude. They were dismissive throughout the interview, and behaved as if they owned the company. It seems they were not looking for a reason to hire, but for a reason not to hire. Similarly, I sensed nepotism in the company and fear from certain individuals within sales dept. that they would be "displaced" if more competent person came onboard. I also sensed that there are some people who genuinely cared about this company, while others didn't at all. The way sales department answered my questions is different that the answers I got from all other depts, using same questions. I sensed there is something really wrong with leadership at sales department. One person told me at the interview "people either stick with use for a year and leave or they stick with us and stay". Translation: Innovative people have no chance of succeeding at this company - this company is not looking for talent, they're looking for retirees or people who won't "ruffle feathers" or ask too many questions. This company was established by a visionary MIT graduate 30 years ago, but it grew old as it kept the same people with the same mentality. The company has "admission test" which is basically quantitative and qualitative reasoning modeled after GMAT and GRE. It is NOT an IQ test! (IQ doesn't have numerical or reading questions at all - it evaluates ability to recognize patterns and is mostly comprised of graphics). Without passing preliminary test you won't even make it to the interviewers. Keep in mind though that the people who are interviewing you passed the test 10-20 yrs ago; however, test today is much more difficult than that passed by the old guys at this company.

      Interview

Standard phone call and a weird test that everyone has to attend, not sure how it helps between different roles, i think it should only apply to programmers/coders to be honest.
