      Editor Interview

      30 Aug 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Internet Brands

      Interview

A couple weeks after applying, I was invited for a pleasant phone screen with HR, then was asked to complete an editing test over the next 7-10 days. This included line editing / copyediting / fact-checking several restaurant and hotel reviews (including cutting word counts by about half), as well as an exercise that involved reading one of their print guides, explaining what they do well and providing suggestions for improvement, pitching an entirely new print guide, and writing an essay on what travel means to me. Needless to say I spent quite some time on this, never to hear anything back, not even a confirmation that materials were received from HR (even after a follow-up). And, while this part isn't technically on them, it was additional annoying icing on the cake that due to library covid closures, I bought one of their print guides to do the exercise, so I contributed to their sales in addition to providing numerous ideas and pitches without compensation. In situations like this it's hard not to infer that they're gathering and using good ideas for free from senior candidates, only to relist the position at a lower level later...

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What are some of the pros and cons of our approach? What do we do well, and what can we do better to continue to be relevant to today's travelers and their changing needs?
