I spoke with a recruiter who had placed many of the company’s senior roles and was told I would be passed on to the hiring manager. Shortly after, I received an email from the recruiter with questions that the hiring manager was asking about me.
The second question specifically had to do with my age, and said the following: “she only graduated in 2010? That is very junior for the team she will be managing”. I wrote out quite a lengthy answer, explaining that it took me longer to compete college than most due to me working and changing majors 3 years into my degree. I explained that my career experience began before and during my college education, and focused on my relevant experience vs my perceived age based on the year I graduated college.
The end feedback I received was that my experience was “too junior”, despite the fact I met / exceeded the experience requirements and my 2 previous job titles were “head of credit card marketing” for a multi billion dollar fashion brand and “VP, client development officer” for one of the largest retail finance banks in the county. I don’t mind not getting a job, but I am completely taken aback by this outright age discrimination exhibited by the hiring manager.
Furthermore, it seems the card program is suffering with very high attrition, and based on the numerous negative customer complaints, it’s not hard to understand why.
