      Sales Engineer Interview

      24 Sept 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Vienna
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Keyence (Vienna) in Jul 2016

      Interview

I was surprised as they approached me although I did not apply for a job at Keyence. A very friendly lady called me and told me she found my CV. She said on Monster but I dont think I uploaded my resume there. Anyway I was happy somebody was interested in my skills and I was especially excited about diving into a technical environment without having any technical background. I have two Bachelors and a Masters Degree but not much experience. She asked me if it is ok to ask questions straight away to find out whether this could be a good fit. I was surprised but thought yeah why not. She asked me general questions with no knowledge required like: - when are you available? - are you interested in working in sales? - do you want me to make an appointment for an interview? - I said yes. And I asked how she found me. It was short, maybe 10 mins. After that it was similar to the other interview processes that have been described already. When I read the reviews it was hard for me to imagine what a "simple role play" is though. That is why I will try to explain this a bit more in detail so you get an idea. After my second phone interview the recruiter (friendly but computer-like lady) said we will do a role play in our next interview. I will be the sales person who is trying to sell her something. At the beginning of the next interview she explained to me a short szenario and what she will be looking for. She said something like this: You are a sales person in a phone shop and I come into your shop. Try to ask question 80% of the time. It was not much, I know. So I started like "Hi, can I help you?" and she said "No" So to make it short now. It is all about asking questions and dont stop. AND close the deal! My approach in sales was/and still is to find out what the customer really wants and dont be too pushy. As far as I can say this is not the case for them. They want you to be aggressive and close the deal. This does not necessarily mean you have to sell something but at least make the customer come back or make an appointment or give them a free test version. To sum it up it was very standardized and formal and as long as they were interviewing me they were friendly. But it was all about getting information about me. When I was trying to get more information about the job she was not able to answer some of the questions which was surprising and disappointing at the same time. It was definitely a great chance to practice interviews! I think they are looking for aggressive sales persons. They did not offer me a job. They sent me a standardized mail which was quite surprising after all these phone calls. I think there was one main reason for that. I am not the aggressive sales person they were looking for.

      Interview

My interview process consisted of two rounds. Was flown out to Chicago to role play one of their products. Thirty minutes of behavioral was pretty typical. The thirty minutes of technical role play was on the more difficult side - thought it went well but wasn't given an offer.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Keyence (Hanoi) in Apr 2026

      Interview

1st round. 5 minutes. Interviewed by one manager, face-to-face. Most questions are quite typical, such as your experience, your reasoning for the application, your general understanding of the role, and your strengths and weaknesses. There's one question, though, where you have to think on your feet, which can be tricky.
