      Embedded Software Engineer Interview

      18 Mar 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Montreal, QC
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at MANNARINO (Montreal, QC)

      Interview

An HR agent got in touch with me. The position was in Montreal. There was a screening test before the in-person interview. The test was poorly designed. There are 3 options on how you can do it: on-line, download and then upload. No time is given to try which one suits the candidate better. I have chosen the online version. The pictures, diagrams, legends, etc were tiny, blind. I could not clearly see them. The tasks were not clearly defined. need to guess. The online version does not allow us to see the diagrams and code at the same time. Only one screen could be seen. After the test, I was invited to the on-site interview. The HR rep. said that the company would pay for the trip to MTL . The company refused to pay car expenses afterward because this was against their policy. They set up skype interviews in such cases and it was a misunderstanding in my case. I should have asked this in writing. Onsite the HR asks for the driver's license etc. I was not comfortable releasing this information before an offer was made. It should be two people conducting the interview. One of them was away so that the interview was done by one person - director of engineering. It went well. The director has lots of experience (education) knows his area pretty well. I liked how the interview went. The result, however, was strange: "... As much as we liked your qualification, we are afraid that you may be overqualified for the rest of the current team. If we would have 2-3 other employees with your qualification, there would be a balance, however as it stands now, the gap of the level of education is a bit too wide".
