We communicated via e-mail for awhile. I asked for an informational interview first and then I did a formal interview. I also kept in touch in between the interviews just making conversation and establishing a personal connection. When I came in, I brought more than a few copies of my resume, business cards, and printed-out copies of my writing samples.
