      Manager Position Interview

      21 Aug 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Mediabistro (New York, NY) in Aug 2015

      Interview

I was disappointed by the lack of professionalism exhibited during my interview process. I had an informal phone interview with the company's hiring manager and two in-person interviews, one with the director of the department, and one with an individual at a parallel level to the open position. While my interviews went well and we were able to have constructive conversations, I was not impressed with behavior moving forward. After my interview, I emailed with the director to inquire about the timeline of hiring decisions. The director said that they would speak to me within two weeks. Two weeks passed with no contact. I know that people can get busy, so I sent the director a polite and brief email requesting an update and to offer any other supporting documents or references that may help with their decision. Another week went by with no response from the director. After a week, I sent a short email to the hiring manager. I stated that I had not had contact since the in-person interviews and requested an update. I stated that I understood things sometimes didn't work out, and that I respected their decision. I wished my best to the company and stated that I would like to receive some form of response, even a short email. Again, I had no response. I get it. Even after positive interviews, you sometimes just don't get the job. Another qualified candidate may come along or they had to restructure the position. I also understand that people are busy. However, after I took the time off work to speak with them, provided writing samples and references, it is basic professional courtesy to provide some kind of response. Even a form rejection letter is acceptable. I wasn't upset about not getting the position. It happens. However, I was very unimpressed with the lack of professional etiquette and respect shown by the company. This is a poor reflection on Mediabistro and an indicator that it is not an environment where professionalism, respect, organization, responsibility, and responsiveness are a priority.
