I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at National Geographic Society (Washington, DC) in Sept 2013
Interview
The interview process wasn't extremely long. It was the typical length. I had a phone interview with an HR rep and then a final interview with the managers. They were very nice. Within a couple days they emailed me that I had the position. The questions weren't extremely difficult. They basically ask you to highlight your experience whether it be professional or educational. You don't always have to talk about internship or volunteer experience. To answer one of their questions I referenced my experience as a Resident Assistant in college. So, think outside of the box. It can go a long way.
Thorough and very accessible! Everyone is very open and friendly, and it's a low stress process if you come prepared. The expectations for candidates are high in the best way

Interview
2+ rounds of interviewing with various teams. Very warm and friendly interviewers who want to get to know you and your experience better. Will ask you why you want to work for National Geographic specifically.

Question 1
Why do you want to intern with National Geographic?

Interview
In 2023, I gathered most interns went through a two to three-part interview process, on average. I personally went through two, one with the direct team and one with an HR representative. The interviews were short and the questions were directly relevant to the internship position's requirements and the candidate's interests/prior experience. All interviewers were pleasant and casual in their demeanor. Nothing to be scared about, although the program is highly competitive. So, come prepared and have a strong why behind your desire to participate.
