I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at New York Life (Pittsburgh, PA) in Nov 2021
Interview
The interview process moved quickly. After I applied online, a hiring manager reached out to me within a week and we scheduled a Zoom interview, which was basically me learning everything there is to know about the position. I was never asked any of the standard interview questions. From there, there was another Zoom interview scheduled a week later with the regional manager. Same style: no questions for me, just showing me presentations of the sales numbers employees have hit in the past. After that, I was given a questionnaire that asked all kinds of things about the types of life insurance, financial securities, etc. that someone would be interested in. I was told to interview 5 family members/friends within a week and have them fill out the questionnaire. The company made sure to say that these will NOT be used as leads and that this is just a practice exercise. However, I was not about to ask my family and friends to fill these questionnaires out without even having an offer, even conditionally, on the table. I withdrew myself from consideration at that point. Since NY Life employees are not allowed to sell to their own families, I got the feeling that these questionnaires wouldn't be used as leads for ME, but possibly for other employees. There are better ways to test a candidate's people skills. For instance, asking standard interview questions to gauge a candidate's abilities is a start. Overall, the NY Life hiring managers I dealt with were very professional and cordial, and I did enjoy speaking with them. The position just didn't seem to be for me.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
There were no standard interview questions asked aside from wanting to know if I had flexibility of office locations.
