The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Chicago, IL) in Aug 2011
Interview
The initial interview was more of a social skills assessment - no finance background necessary. Once you pass the recruiter's standards, you go on to take multiple personality profiles. These are essentially psych analyses. The second interview was also informal, though you are given the opportunity to meet some of the city's top employees, i.e. the managing partner for the Chicago branch. Again, most of the questions were informal - the role requires you to be socially capable, they really check for that. It seems that the general atmosphere is fairly laid back, but you have to be ready to commit to a sales position such as this one.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Jackson, TN) in Dec 2018
Interview
It was very laid back and easy. I could to tell immediately that there was going to be a great work environment. I also was able to clearly understand goals and requirements of the job.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (New York, NY) in May 2016
Interview
I had 2 interviews after reaching out to the recruiter I met at my school. During the first one I answered standard questions and scenarios. I was then assigned 10 market surveys to be completed by the next interview. I was offered the job upon completion of the surveys and a successful 2nd interview. This was exactly the line of work I was looking to do so I was not scared away by the commission based pay
