I applied through university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Mendota Heights, MN) in Mar 2014
Interview
They have a 3 step application process. It starts with a more informal interview with recruiter, tell me about your self type questions. This was fairly open and you are able to ask about the position. After the first interview, you take a personality questionnaire. Then the next interview was with someone in the leadership team who will help you out during the internship. This is look slightly at the personality quiz, then ask questions like strengths/weaknesses. Then they give you some pre-work of interviewing other people you know about their experience with financial planners/services. Then you give a presentation to them and will likely offer you on the spot.
I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Hartford, CT)
Interview
Was told about the program and how I would need to get certified to sell life insurance in order to participate in the program. The interviewer was laid back and relaxed. It was a group interview.
I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (San Jose, CA)

Three rounds with calls with the head of hiring and with the head of the department, all behavioral questions were asked at each round to get to know you and your network
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Skokie, IL) in Mar 2026
Interview
It’s a three round interview, but it really more about getting to know you as a person no technicals. The second and third interview was the recruiter speaking on the job overview.
