      Senior Reporter Interview

      29 May 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Octus (New York, NY) in Mar 2018

      Interview

Initial phone interview with HR and hiring manager, in office interview with several people, followed by exams. The HR team very professional and interviewers were friendly. The tests include writing a hard news piece - if you have a business journalism experience, then you won't have any issues. The other parts include writing a reporter and suggesting story ideas. This part is ridiculous and unfair because they are asking job seekers for ideas that they can potentially use. In other words, exploit job seekers for free work. This is something that startups do, but the likes of HSBC, JPMorgan Chase or Marsh & McClennan will not do. Two week after I finished the test, I heard from the company that the job is on hold due to internal changes. I appreciated the company's transparency and how professionally and helpfully HR handled my candidacy. HOWEVER, given the amount time and effort I put into completing the test, I was disappointed with the company.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Technical questions, which were fair; the obvious: why do you want to work for us? If you don't know the difference between what it means to hold a bond versus owning equity in a company, then your chances of proceeding in the process are nearly zero.

Thank you for your feedback regarding the interview process. We are sorry that the process turned out to be longer than expected due to some internal changes and we strive to be as transparent and communicative as possible throughout the process. The case study portion is an important part of our interview process and helps us to gauge a reporter’s writing and reporting abilities. Our intention is also to give candidates an opportunity to see what kind of work they would be doing in the role and to ensure they enjoy it. We understand the case studies are time consuming and we are always happy to work with candidates on timing. None of the material submitted during the interview process is used for editorial purposes or anything other than the interview process. We appreciate the feedback and will take it into consideration. Best of luck in your current search!
