      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      28 Dec 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at OnePay

      Interview

Brief screening with a recruiter which seemed already like a foregone conclusion, then a Karrot (outsourced) technical interview. I firmly believe companies should not outsource interviewing - for the benefit of the candidate as well as the company.

      Question 1

What is one challenging technical problem you solved, and how?

      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at OnePay (Chicago Hts) in May 2026

      Interview

The technical code screening and system design were both outsourced by a company called Karat. I did not interact with anyone from OnePay beyond the initial phone screening with the recruiter. The interviewer read off a script, showed little interest in my process, and following some technical issues on my end I proposed reschedule the interview to maintain the integrity of the interview. I was dismissed, he continued on his script, and delivered low-effort responses to my questions on clarification. I am firmly against the idea of a third party handling the interview process. It shows a lack of commitment, interest, and inability to acknowledge the importance of culture. Very disappointing interview process.

      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at OnePay

      Interview

I had one of the worst interview experiences. I would not recommend serious engineers to apply to this company. The first round was conducted by an external company called Karat. The interviewer did not show any interest in their job. Even though my role is about React Native, the interviewer introduced themselves as a backend engineer and had no experience with React Native at all. Shockingly, he only asked questions about some deprecated techniques, which was weird. The interview session was extremely boring. I have over 10 years of experience with big corporations, but I still received a rejection email saying that I did not qualify. With this approach, they will definitely lose out on good engineers.

React Native questions but using deprecated techniques.
