The interview itself was not difficult, but it was uncomfortable in a way that set the tone very early on. During my phone interview with a director, it became clear that my candidacy was being evaluated almost exclusively through the lens of my resume, particularly perceived gaps, rather than through discussion of skills, experience, or potential for growth.
This approach felt disconnected from the realities of today’s job market and significantly narrowed what could have been a productive conversation. The emphasis on resume gaps, coupled with unsolicited career advice within the first ten minutes, was discouraging and overlooked the nuance of individual career paths.
While there were aspects of the job description that aligned strongly with my background and others that would have required a learning curve, the impression was that the team was seeking a candidate who checked every box immediately, with little interest in development or adaptability. That expectation is worth noting for candidates considering the process.
