      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Pella

      Interview

It wasn't a terrible interview at all. The hiring manager, though didn't bother to email before setting up an interview. Just decided it was best to call when it was best for them. So this was sort of the first red flag. It's not hard to set up an appointment. I was busy so I couldn't take their call, and asked them to email me over an invite. I went through the interview after a week or so, and while it would be a new industry for me, it was like I was starting all over from the bottom. They said they have experienced many reps not lasting more than a few months before they quit. That was kind of the second red flag. Then they went into to discuss compensation. Start out reps at 60k-65k, and then for the first 6 months 1% commission. After 6 months you get bumped to as high as 3% commission, but your commission rate is affected by discounts you offer. So anywhere between 1%-3%. I was also told, reps were not privy to the costs or profit margins of the goods being sold. So they tried to act all transparent, which to someone with a different background than mine, I could see how this may seem fair. I got a second interview, but when the dude called out of the blue like the hiring manager did, I made up my mind that Pella Products of Kansas City doesn't care about their employees or have any respect for their prospects. As someone who used to determine commission payouts to my reps, I had to take a second look at this job. I just couldn't do it, and withdrew from consideration. Reps should know the costs of goods sold. They should know their profit margins. They should see an accounting of every penny they are earning and what the company is earning. Anything less of that is not being fair to your reps. Now the Kansas City location is an independent office of Pella, but if this pay scale is an industry standard, then every rep in this industry can do much better for themselves if they just look around a bit.
