I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Penn State (State College, PA) in Sept 2016
Interview
Initial round was a skype interview about graduate research experience to gauge if the experience could fit in with the requirements of the lab. It went on for like 60 minutes and was about technical details of the research (very do-able).
Later called for visit to the campus to formally present my research experience to an audience consisting lab members and other faculty member. During the day, I met with other faculty member to know their research expertise, instruments that were available a comprehensive tour of various labs and lab related facilties on campus which was very impressive.

Interview
The interview took place over a Zoom call and was fairly casual. Instead of a question-and-answer format, it was more of a conversation about science. The interviewer asked about my career aspirations and motivations for the work. I also met with the team to get a better idea of how working there is like.
