The person I interviewed with was focused on gossiping about some internal business challenges my previous employer had gone through while trying to tell me they knew everything about the issues, which were, in fact, false rumors. I felt the interviewer enjoyed emphasizing drama and putting down a more successful company.
The focus then turned to mutual contacts in the industry, with the interviewer asking for my opinions on them while giving me their own opinions in return. I was then asked if they were to call all these people, what would they say about me? I welcomed them calling everyone, but that's hardly the appropriate way to ask for references.
This was followed up by multiple requests to tell them how much money I made and statements about how I would be bored if I were to work somewhere that was slow, not outgoing, and not flashy like my previous company. All their comments seemed aimed at belittling my previous employer for their success, grandiosity, and ambition. And because my last company was at the top of the industry and extraordinary, then I also must be too pretentious, flamboyant, and other false accusations about my character.
I could continue writing about my experience, but I think I've provided enough context. The entire experience was inappropriate and unprofessional, and I should have ended the interview right away.
