      Staff Software Engineer Interview

      5 Oct 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Scottsdale, AZ
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Plexus Worldwide (Scottsdale, AZ) in Oct 2024

      Interview

Started off with an HR screening which was basically a run down of what was already in my resume so fairly standard. This was followed by a personality and IQ test. These tests were not too time consuming and actually interesting. Had an on sight interview with a manager, the architect, and a team lead. It didn't seem like they had read my resume because they didn't ask about my previous experience in any of my positions. They verbally asked a mix of some good and some arbitrary questions. I really don't like this "verbal golden question" format. Give me some quiet time with a written test with 50 to 100 questions targeted for the position instead so I can show what I really know instead of answering 4 or 5 special super magic eliminator questions. Many interviews are like this these days and I think its just lazy, and you really can't provide consistency across candidates this way. They had a white boarding coding exercise which I really hate because nobody works that way on the job. I did okay but not great. Frankly having everyone looking over my shoulder when I'm trying to play computer with a dry erase marker was too distracting to be able to think straight.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We appreciate that you found the initial stages, including the HR screening and the Predictive Index Assessment, to be standard and even interesting. We’re sorry to hear that your experience during the on-site interview didn’t meet your expectations. We understand that interview formats can sometimes feel challenging, especially when they include verbal problem-solving and whiteboarding exercises. Our goal is to create a balanced interview process that evaluates technical skills, problem-solving ability, and communication style, which is why we incorporate a mix of assessments. However, we take your point about the potential disconnect between interview scenarios and real-world work environments, especially with exercises like whiteboarding, and we’re always looking for ways to improve this. Thank you again for your constructive feedback. It helps us refine our process, and we wish you the best in your future endeavors.
