I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Potratz (Schenectady, NY) in Sept 2017
Interview
Not the worst interview I've had but certainly very strange:
The first on-site scheduled was held in what looked like an abandoned reception area. The interviewer, introduced as technical manager, brought two small dogs with him that were a little distracting and didn't turn on the lights, so I could see the shadows of the blinds on his face the whole time. He asked reasonable screening questions but nothing technical or anything that couldn't be answered over the phone. It become more ominous when, while giving a tour of the office, he (deliberately) opened a storage closet to reveal and identify a one-way mirror (!!!) peering into another office. (I took the claims of "culture of surveillance" more seriously after that.)
Second on-site was indicated as the technical portion. It was by panel and its substance ended up being the two questions, "Do you know PHP?" and "Have you worked with WordPress?" This, and fielding some questions about my character and personal life totaled less than twenty minutes. I felt that I was extending an olive branch by discussing salary before the offer but was instead treated to radio silence, even after following up the next week.
I didn't get a good enough glimpse of the organization to come to any strong conclusions about the dynamic of a founding couple and the technical manager seemed reasonable and friendly but I am very skeptical about the lack of any technical screen.
