I applied online for a Leasing Consultant position and received a response within a week. requested a copy of my resume, I was told I would be a great fit for the position. We scheduled an interview for later that week.
Unfortunately, I never received a call at the scheduled time. I reached out by phone, but the answering service informed me the hiring manager wasn’t in. I followed up with a polite email apologizing that we missed each other, and the hiring manager quickly replied apologizing as well, explaining that he had gotten very busy. I appreciated the quick response and let them know I was happy to reschedule for the following week. I provided several days and times but after that, I was completely ghosted.
A few days later I received an automated message stating that they were no longer moving forward with my application. This came as a shock given our recent communication and scheduled interview. The entire experience left a very bad impression.
I found the process unprofessional and a waste of time. Some hiring managers seem to forget that interviews are a two-way process. Companies are made up of employees — we need each other. Just as good companies are hard to find, so are dedicated and professional employees. When an applicant is engaged, responsive, and eager to schedule and follow up, that shows genuine interest and commitment.
Ghosting a candidate after scheduling an interview reflects poorly on leadership and company culture. It makes me question how employees are treated internally. A strong leader follows through, communicates, and values others’ time even if the decision is not to move forward.
If you’re reading this, know your worth. Take your time, do your research, and pay attention to how a company handles its hiring process because it’s often a reflection of how they treat their people.
